Prior to retirement, Mr. Schwefel practiced real estate law, business law, and agricultural law with the firm since his graduation from the University of California’s Boalt Hall Law School in 1963.
Mr. Schwefel’s practice included real estate transactions (purchases, sales, leasing, exchanges, acquisitions, financing); complex business transactions (entity formation, sales, mergers, reorganizations, acquisitions), as well as representing agricultural enterprises and farm families in a multitude of areas involved in growing, shipping, harvesting and marketing of the Salinas Valley’s diverse agricultural products.
Over the years Mr. Schwefel held a wide range of leadership positions in numerous organizations, such as:
- Hartnell College Foundation (Chair, Board of Directors)
- Salinas Rotary Charities Foundation (member, Board of Trustees)
- Hartnell College (past President and member, Board of Trustees)
- California Young Lawyers Association (past President and board member)
Mr. Schwefel participated in charitable organizations that involve the agricultural industry. He was a member of the Board of Directors and an officer of Ag Against Hunger, a local agricultural organization that distributes fresh fruit and vegetables to food banks. Mr. Schwefel was also one of the founders of Salinas River Channel Coalition, which helps Monterey County landowners mitigate the cost of environmental compliance and permitting.
